A department
official said he was unaware of the news before it was announced. CHEA's
recognition is separate from that of the department and "will evaluate and
monitor ACICS in accordance with ED's legal and procedural requirements,"
said the official.
On
Friday, ACICS informed CHEA that it was withdrawing its application for
recognition from the association. ACICS stated in a public statement that in
December it was stated that the CHEA recognition committee recommended the
association not to recognize ACICS. The move does not prevent the institutions
it accredits from getting federal aid.
The
committee determined that ACICS did not meet nine CHEA standards, according to
the statement. CHEA had revised these standards and the changes went into
effect in 2019. ACICS cited concerns about new standards in its statement.
