Essential
education
Most
cable service providers provide training for new, secondary-qualified staff,
but some jobseekers enroll in training programs offered by technical schools
and community colleges. Programs can last up to five years depending on the
depth and breadth of the subject, and cover programs such as basic electrical
engineering, telecommunications, physics and mechanical engineering.
Completion
of apprenticeship programs is common in this area, according to the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics (BLS). In addition, cable technicians can gain voluntary
qualifications through associations such as the Fiber Optics Association.
Work
skills required
Cable
technicians must have a high level of manual dexterity and a strong background
in mathematics and science. They also need to be good communicators and should
be able to solve problems independently.
Economic
Outlook and Role
Despite
the fact that cable TV and internet equipment are already installed in most
residential areas, job growth is expected for line installers and repairers,
including cable technicians, 8% from 2016-2026, according to BLS (www.bls.
gov). The average annual salary for cable installers in March 2019 was $
38,780, per Payscale.com.
